Investigating the Polymerization Shrinkage Stress of Dental Composites: A Comparative Study
Research Focus Introduction
Dental composites are widely used in restorative dentistry due to their aesthetic properties and ability to bond to tooth structure. However, one important aspect to consider in their use is polymerization shrinkage stress. This is the stress that is generated within a composite material as it undergoes polymerization, or curing, which can lead to microleakage, marginal discoloration, and even debonding of the restoration. Studying polymerization shrinkage stress is crucial in understanding the behavior of dental composites and developing ways to minimize its negative effects in clinical use. The aim of this study is to evaluate the shrinkage stress of newly developed dental composites.
Project Responsibilities
For my research project on Polymerization Shrinkage Stress, I have been taking a multifaceted role encompassing sample preparation, testing, and data analysis, incorporating basic statistical techniques. This comprehensive involvement extends to crafting a poster presentation, composing an abstract, and drafting a manuscript. I also have been training fellow undergraduate students in machine operation, showcasing my leadership and communication skills. This project has not only been deepening my understanding of polymerization shrinkage stress but also furthering my proficiency in effective science communication.
The various Composites Tested
Six resin composites were tested: 2 new universal composites prototypes (BU-1 and BU-2, 2 bulk-fill composites (Filtek Bulk fill One (FBO) and Reveal HD), 1 commercially available universal composite (Filtek Universal (FU)) and 1 conventional composite (Filtek Supreme (FS)).
